Dalton Dailey, my dad, worked as a cabinet maker during his teen age years, then as an auctioneer/antique dealer understudy before getting married and serving as a Navy Seabee in the Aleutian Islands.

With a blending of skills, a creative brain, entrepreneurial mindset and a disciplined work ethic, Dalton Dailey rolled up his sleeves and started his own business … Dailey’s Office Furniture Co … everything for the office; office supplies, office furniture, design accessories and CUSTOM FURNITURE.

I found these and more photos in a box in our attic. It brought back so many wonderful memories of my years in the family business.

Dailey’s became a “go to”shopping center for people from all over Arkansas … those were fun days.

The photos show a peak into the other parts of our retail offerings … lamps, desk accessory, art and ash trays. We sold thousands of ash trays in hundreds of shapes and colors. During the 60’s and 70’s an ashtray was a necessary decorator item on every end table, conference table and desk. Thank God, that item is a part of the past.

As my life path detoured into the world of Politics, while Little Rock Mayor, I worked to make our city a SMOKE FREE CITY, ultimately working successfully with Governor Mike Huckabee to pass restrictive smoking legislation statewide. Aah … fresh air!

In closing this blog entry, I make special note of my mom, Ellen Dailey. She was the rock for my dad in each and every step of his life and career.

I miss them both.

Due to bad weather and conflicts, the annual Charlie Brown Christmas Campout did not happen. However, Charlie didn’t let us off the hook … he appeared during the Super Bowl camping weekend.

Charlie Brown campers.

I must explain further. We camped one night at Kyle’s Landing on the Buffalo National River and commemorated Charlie Brown Christmas the second night at our friend’s home … Santa hats, campfire and all.

There is little more enjoyable then time in the outdoors of Arkansas, the Natural State. Add to that, time on America’s First National River, THE BUFFALO NATIONAL RIVER and one emerges refreshingly prepared for cars, paved surfaces and the cacophony of urban living.

Footnote: we choose Super Bowl weekend because most of us are at home. Chiefs fans probably wish they had stayed another night on the Buffalo.

While returning home, my buddy. John and I witnessed a majestic Bald Eagle lift from feeding just a few feet from my car … beautiful!!! Maybe an omen?
